How the Peanut Grew
Posted on May 28th, 2009. Filed under: Travel.Every year, the peanuts are harvested at a particular area in the Alabama, Georgia, and Florida tri-states. And when this occurs, the residents celebrate the importance of peanuts and the role that they play in Southeast Alabama, known to the locals as the Wiregrass area. This is also done as a nod to the producers of the peanut crop and their constant dedication in ensuring that this healthy and tasty nut reaches us annually.
Dothan, Alabama is widely known as the World’s Peanut Capital. It is one of the prime locations for growing peanuts, needless to say. If you are a Dothan, then you are quite lucky to be at the center of peanut country. This place makes more than sixty-five percent of all peanuts in the United States.
Peanuts play a vital role in this area; there could be no doubt about that. Let’s look back and see how the National Peanut Festival came to be:
In 1983, it was a near-freezing Thursday that this festival honoring the peanut was inaugurated. The three-day event back then included a pageant, a parade, a historical play, and a grand ball. Until 1941, it was celebrated annually. The war put it to a halt, but it came back in full force when 1947 rolled around.
The year 1952 marked a significant turning point for the peanut, as the Chamber of Commerce could no longer oversee or sponsor the event. It was then decided that the carnival would be added to help finance the event. The rest is history; the peanut festival has included a number of exhibitions, including a craft show.
During the peanut festival’s craft show, a number of people with amazing talent show off their stuff and skills with the arts and crafts. Each of their crafted items are inspired by the tasty and healthy nut; be it in image or using a part of the crop. So attend the Peanut Festival and marvel at the craft show while you’re there!
