You’ve just spent weeks packing, cleaning, and moving everything you own into a new home. Now you’re here, and you’re probably looking around and wondering what you’ve gotten yourself into.

It’s impractical to even think about being organized and unpacked within just a few days. Try to unpack in the same order that you packed, or as close to it as possible. Placing boxes in or near the room you’re planning to unpack them in may be impractical, depending on the size and layout of the house, but if possible it will make things much easier.

Don’t be surprised if getting everything completely unpacked takes several weeks or more. Try to place boxes in or near the rooms they’ll be unpacked in, to save yourself some time and extra trips back and forth. This also helps contain the mess from all the crumpled-up paper and other packing materials inside your boxes.

Starting your unpacking in the bedrooms and kitchens is a practical approach. Not having to worry about how and where you’re going to eat and sleep will ease a lot of stress, and help give you the strength to carry on with the rest of the house.

Be prepared for the unexpected. Even though you made arrangements to have your utilities turned on, services such as cable TV and Internet connections can require you to be at home before they can be installed.

It can take a month or two before you’re fully moved in and your life gets back to normal. It’s better to take your time and do things right than to rush through them.

Don’t wait till after you move in to start thinking about what you’ll need to do to make your new home as comfortable and practical as your old one. Having your plan in place before you move will make the process go much more smoothly and quickly.
