Before we look at that, here are the reasons why we are seeing this incredible growth. We saw three distinct events that caused the growth in people hitting the poker tables. Alright, listed in order, this is what took place that led to the poker boom.
It all starts in 1994 when polish poker player, entrepreneur, Henry Orenstein invented the equipment for the the “pocket cam”. The fans are now able to see the pocket cards of all of the players as the hand is played. The beginning for “pocket cam” happened in 1997 on The Late Night Poker Show, in England.
Poker had been on TV since the 70′s, but had a very small viewing audience. This was because not seeing the hole cards the players were working with, you had no idea what the players tactics were. The pocket cam made watching poker on television much more interesting.
The next event that was integral in leading us to the poker boom was the beginning of online poker. The original internet poker room had players at the tables in 1998. People are now able to play from the comfort of virtually any place they can imagine. Web based poker action will display a growing player base as poker players became comfortable with this new poker format.
This sets the stage for the decisive piece to the puzzle. So, when Chris Moneymaker wins the 2003 WSOP Main Event, poker takes off. Gaining his entry thru a $40 online poker room satellite, then winning pokers most coveted tournament, completes the sequence.
The combination of the pocket cam improving the popularity of seeing poker on TV, and the rise of web based poker rooms adding to the number of poker players, set things up for poker to take off to incredible levels of popularity. Everyone seeing an online, rookie player, win the biggest tournament in poker, people flocked to the tables in huge numbers.
